The best thing about a blog is that you don’t need any website-building experience to manage it. If you have access to a computer and you can type, you have the ability to run a blog!

Every time you want to update your blog you simply open it up, start typing just like an email, and hit publish. Job done!

While a lot of bloggers write about rubbish like their cats and what they ate for lunch, most people blogging for their business do very well. You write about topics related to your products, and people find them through Google.

If you hope to make money online, and you don’t have a niche blog, you may well struggle.

Before blogs, if you wanted to get indexed in Google you’d have to create your websites from scratch, page by page, tag by tag, link by link.

But now, with a blog everything is so much easier. You can create posts and pages in a jiffy, edit your header or sidebar or footer, link to people and have them link to you, spread your posts around thr web, manually and automatically, promote your content on sites likes Twitter and Squidoo and Facebook, and invite comments from interested readers.

But when you write with passion… everything changes.

You’ll get fans, followers, subscribers, customers with specific interests to sell to, and you’ll get high rankings in Google for your search terms.

There is a concept popular among internet marketers called The Long Tail. And it can be summarised as this: “There are more people every day searching for all the long unique and rare search terms, such as ‘camping tents for tall people’, than all the people searching for the most popular search terms.”

It is easier to get 100 rankings for long tail camping keywords than for a bit keyword like “camping tents”.

What this means is if you target a specific niche, there WILL be people who will find you. It also means if you target large general popular topics like ‘insurance’ or ‘making money’ then your posts will likely never ever see page 1 of Google.

So if you’re looking for the best niche blog ideas, start with your own interests. Forget profitability.

Profits will come.

If you have the audience you can make the money.

The money is the easy part, it’s the AUDIENCE that’s the hard part. And you can only get your audience on a topic you’re passionate about.

Mainly, what do you want your blog to accomplish?

What you ultimately choose to create will depend on:

How Professional. If you are looking for something to put your name on, you don’t want anything garish or childish. You want professional. Unless you’re blogging about candy for kids perhaps…

How Much Control. If you are blogging on someone else’s site, like Wordpress.com, you must respect their rules. This will sometimes mean your blog will get deleted overnight because you blogged about something against their rules, like “making money” etc. Usually though, you should be fine.

But still… Don’t build your house on someone else’s land!

In my opinion, your best option is to run your own wordpress blog from your own web hosting. This gives you ultimate control, and can easily look very professional.

You can do this yourself, or hire someone to do it for you. Either way, I recommend this option as the way to go.
